5 Halloween Skincare Tips

Halloween is just around the corner, and for those who celebrate this means it’s time to plan a killer costume. If your costume involves makeup, don’t let the fun spirit of Halloween cloud your judgment when it comes to your skin’s well-being.

Here are a few tricks to treat your skin right this Halloween.

1. Protect your skin with a barrier cream

No matter what quality makeup you are using, barrier cream is essential for sealing off your skin and avoiding any absorption. Barrier creams are ideal for costume makeup that is a skin-staining shade – no one wants to wake up the next morning with green, purple, or blue skin!

2. Skip the Halloween store makeup and go for cosmetic grade

There are so many options when it comes to cheap costume makeup; however, if you want to do what’s best for your skin, you will avoid drugstore or Halloween store makeup this year. Spending more money on cosmetic-grade beauty products (usually labeled as ‘professional’ or ‘theater’) will be less harsh on your skin. Cheap makeup may be labeled as hypoallergenic, but it will clog your pores and do more harm than good.

TIP: Always test out the makeup beforehand to see how your skin reacts.

3. Seal it in to avoid smudging

If you’re planning on going out for Halloween, you want to make sure your makeup lasts all night. To avoid runny, smeared, flaky makeup, try setting your face with a makeup sealer or setting spray before going out. You can also use a translucent powder to keep things in place.

4. Take advantage of what you have on hand

Running out of time and realizing your costume needs fake blood, bruises, or an extra boost of corpse-like skin? Don’t waste your time by making a trip to the store! Instead, use makeup products you already have at home to give your costume its last-minute touch-ups. A deep red shade of lipstick is great for pretend blood, while matte eye shadow (browns, purples, greens, and whites) can be used to create bruises, dirt, or a pale, witchy complexion.

5. Don’t forget about the after party – taking the makeup off!

This step is perhaps the most important of them all. It is never a good idea to go to sleep without washing off your makeup. The thick, cakey, or ridiculously layered Halloween costume makeup needs extra attention to remove. Before you wet your skin, apply a layer of cold cream to your face and wipe it off to make it easier to remove oil-based makeup. After this step, follow your regular cleansing routine. Makeup remover, facial cleanser, a gentle exfoliator, and moisturizer is sure to leave your skin feeling fresh, breakout free, and glowing.

Don’t let irritated skin or breakouts ruin your Halloween fun!

Go all-out with makeup this year and keep your skin happy and healthy at the same time. Happy haunting!
