November is National Healthy Skin Month - and We've Got a New Product to Celebrate!

What do you think of when you think about celebrating in November? National Healthy Skin Month?

Ok, we’ll grant you that Thanksgiving may be actually top of mind, but caring for our skin is important too, right? Let’s face it (pun intended), our skin is an organ (the largest!) and it does require our ongoing commitment to it's health. And it deserves it - it's incredibly hardworking, always there for us and is sometimes too easy to take for granted.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) launched the first National Healthy Skin Month® in November 1997. Since then, it’s become an annual event where the AAD and dermatologists:

· Emphasize the importance of good skin care.

· Share tips that can lead to healthier skin, hair, and nails.

· Ask Americans to take time to pay attention to their skin and adopt healthy habits to care for their skin.

As the largest organ of your body, your skin reveals a lot about your overall health. Our skin requires maintenance for life, so in honor of National Healthy Skin Month this November, follow these tips to refresh your skincare routine from the inside out.

But first! Celebrate Healthy Skin Month with our newest product: Floral Face Milk! A serum rich in nourishment from Omega fatty acids from meadowfoam seed and rosehip seed oils. Squalane supports healthy barrier function, helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, locks in moisture and promotes skin elasticity. It’s calming, hydrating, non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) and anti-inflammatory. Contact us to order (30 ml is $20).

Apple Oleo Mist is here just in time for the holidays. This lightweight face and body oil is fast absorbing for a dewy skin glow. Oh and did we mention it's only around for the holidays! And 20% off through December 23rd. Contact us to order (2 oz. is reg. $24).

Healthy Skin Care Month Tips:

Keep a Regular Skincare Routine: You could quickly drain your savings on skincare products and procedures offering instant youth and beauty, but what’s most needed is a regular routine of cleansing and moisturizing. You get bonus points for nourishing serums and exfoliating too! Find what works for you and stick to it, just like brushing your teeth. If you’re not sure what your skin needs – make an appointment with one of our student estheticians for a skin diagnosis, relaxing and repairing skincare treatment and product recommendations!

Manage Stress: A healthy mind is essential to maintain healthy skin. Stress is the stealthy trigger of a myriad of skin care issues, from breakouts to chronic conditions such as psoriasis. While avoiding stress altogether isn’t realistic, you can maintain healthy skin by managing your stress. Regular exercise is a great way to decrease stress and keep your skin balanced. Something as simple as taking a walk around your block can make a huge impact. Breakouts and dermatitis can both result from too much stress. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress is a risk factor for eczema. Understanding what is causing stress and how to relieve it are essential measures for preventing outbreaks.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Getting enough Z’s does wonders for your body and your mind. Depending on your age, seven to eight hours each night is ideal. While your mind is resting, your skin is busy rebuilding cells and rebalancing hydration. When you’re in the bedroom, keep screen time at a minimum for an extra restful sleep.

Eat a Healthy Diet: Take control of your skin by nourishing it with what you eat. Cut out crash diets that take a toll on your skin and replace them by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Bonus points for eating berries, broccoli, oranges and sweet potatoes which are all great sources of Vitamin C, the crown prince of skin care nutrients. Also, don’t hesitate to add avocado to your sandwiches or salads, the superfood is a great source of skin-smoothing Vitamin E. Obviously, what you eat is as essential for healthy skin as what you put on it. Get plenty of fruit and vegetables. Greens especially are key for skin – brightening, hydrating, and draining puffiness. Foods like flaxseeds and walnuts replenish the omega 3 fatty acids that help skin retain moisture.

Use Sun Protection: Don’t let cooler temperatures stop you from applying sunscreen. The sun’s rays are powerful throughout the entire year, even when you can’t feel them on your face. Protect your skin by applying a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 everyday, rain or shine. Sunscreen is one of the key factors in preventive skincare (and anti-aging). More importantly, wearing sunscreen regularly lowers the risk of developing serious skin issues like skin cancer.

Moisturize From the Inside Out: Hydrated skin doesn’t just come from a jar. Applying moisturizer is a great way to keep your skin smooth, but staying hydrated is equally important. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day promotes skin circulation and helps the skin repair itself. Try enhancing your water with lemons, berries, a sprig of mint or slices of cucumber. The refreshing flavor will encourage you to keep sipping while adding extra nutrients. Hydrating from the inside out - your skin will thank you for it!

Get a Spot Check: Winter is the best season to get a skin check up. Your skin is likely at its palest during the colder months, and therefore irregular spots that indicate sun damage or skin cancer are naturally more noticeable.

Try these tips and add your own - and celebrate your beauty from the inside out. Happy National Healthy Skin Month!
