Vacation Skin Care: To Do and Not to Do (and products that will help!)

Vacation travel whether by car, train, plane or ship can stress your skin for a number of reasons – a change in climate, heat, cold, changes or overindulgence in food and drink, late nights, sun exposure, chlorine, dust, (allergies) - so it’s no wonder many of us experience bothersome skin problems when we’re on vacation.

Unlike your regular homecare, you need a slightly different skincare routine when you travel to combat these and other issues that may affect your skin during your vacay.

The following are a few from our list of “do” and “do not”:

DO: Invest in a quality Vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is important all year-round, but even more so during the summer months. C helps prevent damage from photoaging (hyperpigmentation or “age spots”), improves appearance of fine lines, and assists with collagen production. Our plant-based Vitamin C Serum is a highly stable form of C – and along with our Advanced Vitamin C Crème – checks the boxes for hydration and moisturizing. (And they’re both 20% off through July 31st, along with our signature Vitamin C facial!)

DO: Be aware of how your skin feels. Does it feel tight or dry? Oily or greasy? Take appropriate action – moisturize or gently cleanse the skin, lightly exfoliate or use a calming serum or sheet mask.

DO: Keep sunscreen with you and apply it wherever you are, sunny weather or cloudy. Use a moisturizer containing SPF 30 or higher if you’re minimalist, or even just apply sunscreen and skip the moisturizer – but SPF is not negotiable.

DO: Use a facial mist. Keep one in the fridge for those scorcher days, one in your purse or suitcase. Facial mists are amazing skin refreshers and can be used any time of day. Our Citrus Freshener is a soothing blend of natural grapefruit essential oil and aloe vera extract.

DON'T: Try new skincare products right before or while you’re on vacation. You don’t want to risk a reaction (inflammation or irritation) while you’re on vacation. Try out new products at least a week or two before you head out. And if you have sensitive skin, skin allergies, or other problematic skin conditions, avoid facials and experimenting with new products while you’re on vacation.

DON’T: Neglect your eyes and lips. Air travel, changes in time zones, and air-conditioned cars or rooms can all affect your skin and your eyes and lips often feel most of the effects. Our favorite remedy is a handy Eye Roll On to soothe, cool, and reduce eye puffiness while our Eye Gel or Eye Contour Crème hydrates and moisturizes. Lips can become dry, chapped, and irritated so pop a couple of our Lip Balms in your case and a container of Lip Scrub to lightly exfoliate and remove dead, dry cells.
