The spa industry is constantly adapting and evolving. Among estheticians and education companies that were interviewed to find out what advanced training is the most popular, these were the top 10 responses.
1. Brazilian waxing. Estheticians want advanced waxing classes, likely because not many 600-hour esthetic schools offer Brazilian waxing. Tip: Make sure your class is in person and hands on.
2. Lash extensions. Lashes are here to stay. Lash & brow salons are everywhere, with no shortage of interested clients. Tip: Look for classes providing a kit with a well-known reputation.
3. Gua Sha. Gua sha involves using a tool to scrape your skin. It has recently been “rediscovered” - especially among beauty influencers and estheticians to help improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. It is actually an ancient practice with roots in traditional Chinese medicine. This service is usually performed by licensed acupuncturists and massage therapists. Professional training is recommended.
4. Oncology esthetics. Advanced classes in oncology esthetics allow you to service your clients at their most vulnerable time. Our very own Euro grad, Becky Kuehn, at Oncology Spa Solutions offers certification and training classes.
5. Microblading. Microblading brows is the fastest growing service in the permanent makeup category. It takes lots of training and practice. Carefully consider when choosing any certification program that the training is from a well-respected source, and decide you will commit to continued education. Tip: The rules vary from state to state, so always stay current on your state’s regulations.
6. Lymphatic massage. This highly specialized and effective massage requires professional training and is usually offered by experienced estheticians in a private or medical spa setting.
7. Microneedling. Check with your state regulations on this treatment before purchasing a class. If your state considers this a medical treatment, it would be outside your scope.
8. Microdermabrasion. This is still a very popular treatment with clients. Do your research, try free classes offered at tradeshows, and buy equipment that comes with solid training.
9. Advanced peel procedures. Most of this training can be found with your product vendor and at industry shows. Use your knowledge of the Fitzpatrick scale and skin histology when "peel" shopping.
10. Microcurrent. Choose microcurrent classes that address your clients’ skin concerns.
A key component to becoming a successful professional in this industry is continually expanding and advancing your education. Continuing education is invaluable! Keeping up with changing and evolving technology and treatments is critical even if you decide you don’t want to offer them in your business. Knowing what’s out there and available to your clients helps prevent them from making mistakes in their treatment choices and establishes you as the go to expert. So get glowing!
