Tips for Newbie Esty Students: School Success and Your Career Journey

ree

For an esthetics education that is top-tier, focus on mastering practical skills, prioritizing professional habits, networking within the industry, and building a professional online portfolio from day one.

This proactive approach will set you up for success well before you graduate.

Academic and skill mastery

  • Take your state board exam seriously. Focus your studying on core subjects like skin anatomy, skin conditions, and sanitation protocols. Create flashcards or join study groups to reinforce key concepts.

  • Deepen your knowledge beyond the basics. While school will teach you the fundamentals, successful estheticians master the science behind the products and treatments they use. Do extra research on advanced topics, such as different skin care ingredients, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

  • Practice constantly. The more hands-on experience you get, the more confident and skilled you will become. Volunteer to work on as many different classmates and models as possible to practice on various skin types.

  • Explore advanced certifications. Specialize in areas that interest you, such as lash extensions, advanced anti-aging treatments, or oncology esthetics. Expanding your skill set makes you more marketable.

Professionalism and brand building

  • Build your professional brand immediately. Don't wait until after you graduate. Create a professional Instagram page to showcase your work, post before-and-after pictures (with client permission), and build an online following.

  • Perfect your personal appearance. When you present your best self, it instills confidence in your clients that you can help them achieve their desired results. Your appearance is a walking advertisement for your skills.

  • Network early and often. Your classmates and instructors are your first professional network. Stay connected with them and reach out to other local estheticians and spa owners. Attend industry trade shows and workshops to meet manufacturers and influencers.

  • Prioritize sanitation. Maintaining a clean and sanitary workspace is non-negotiable and builds client trust. Practice proper hygiene, like using disposable materials and disinfecting tools, as a regular habit.

Mindset and self-care

  • Adopt a business mindset. Understand client management, booking systems, and marketing strategies. Many esthetics programs incorporate business training, but you should also research the legal and financial aspects of running your own business.

  • Stay organized and manage your time. Between theory classes, hands-on practice, and personal commitments, your schedule will be demanding. Use a planner or a digital calendar to track your assignments, clients, and study time.

  • Have fun and avoid drama. Esthetics is a career you are passionate about, so enjoy the journey. Focus on your own goals and avoid getting sidetracked by classroom drama.

  • Practice self-care. Remember to prioritize your mental and physical health to prevent burnout. Get enough rest, eat well, and find healthy ways to manage stress. This allows you to bring your best energy to your clients.
